Week 8 - “Be thou humble"

Dr. Goddard explained that “the natural man is inclined to love himself and fix others” (Goddard, 62). Modern societies that are becoming more and more secular, that do not accept God as the origin of truth for moral and ethical guidance, are finding through the relativity of their own way a “pernicious enemy” and “keeps each of us from connecting with others and from being taught by God” (Goddard, 63).
Another inversion noted by Dr. Goddard is the fact that nowadays people are no longer accepting the concept that marital love requires sacrifices, people only married to satisfy their own personal needs, and are quick to leave the boat, just like a mouse when it feels like it is sinking.
We cannot truly love others if we are not humble. Humility prepares our heart to repentance and change, and real and profound change comes only when we accept the atonement of Jesus Christ, which in turn changes our character. “Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall blead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers.” (D&C 112:10)
In marital relationships, taught Dr. Goddard, when we are humble and repent we can have the “mind of Christ”, and “see our spouses in a new way … we can see … with compassion rather than with irritation”, and we appreciate more than complain.

I learned by my own experience that our own and limited capacities are not able to “fix” all marital problems. I’m married for almost 18 years, I love profoundly my lovely wife, she is my best friend and eternal companion, I appreciate all her efforts and dedication to the establishment of a solid marriage and a happy family. I truly believe that although our many imperfections, we are overcoming many of the life obstacles because our lives are centered in Jesus Christ and His gospel. There are times that I’m weaker and she is the one that help me gain confidence and repent, there are other times that it is exactly the opposite, and it is through this faithful partnership, centered in Christ that we grew as individuals, son and daughter of God, and husband and wife.
